A few months ago, a group of engineers at an online games company called Polygon noticed an odd trend: Their social media feed was dominated by posts from people who were actively seeking out a new piece of technology.
This was not just a curiosity: It was the result of a concerted effort to cultivate a community of like-minded individuals interested in developing something useful, rather than a natural fit.
The company, which is based in San Francisco, spent the past year building its own version of Slack.
The team created a series of tools for users to easily collaborate on a variety of projects, including building apps and apps that work with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat.
“We were kind of doing a bunch of things that didn’t make sense to us, or didn’t seem like we could make sense of them,” cofounder and CEO Dan Breen told me recently.
“And then we realized, wow, we’re creating a platform that could be useful to other people.”
Breen and his team were surprised when they discovered that, with the right tools, anyone could build a Slack-like app.
“You’re not going to create a product with an amazing user interface,” Breen said.
“So if you’re a designer, or a developer, or an engineer, or someone with a technical background, there’s no reason why you can’t build a simple chat bot that can work with a Facebook Messenger app.
That’s what we were trying to do.”

The app is called SlackRock, and it’s an easy-to-use tool that lets users chat with anyone on their social network.
The most basic version, for example, allows users to post their own posts to a specific channel, or invite friends to a Slack meetup.
When users interact with SlackRock chatbots, they can see the results of their actions in real-time, and can also send messages and respond to messages in real time.
Users can add new channels and chatrooms, and the app lets users invite friends into a channel.
“The thing that people love about Slack is that it’s completely customizable,” Beren told me.
“If you like something and want to see it on Slack, just click the little green button that’s in the top right corner of the screen.
It’s that simple.
That interface is a lot of fun.”
Beren and his fellow developers are using SlackRock to help create a new social app called Zapier, which will let users connect with people on other social networks in real life.
Zapier is based on SlackRock but is different enough that it can also work with other social media platforms.

“It’s not like a traditional social media app, which has this ‘My feed is up’ button that says, ‘I want to connect with you,'” Beren explained.
“This app has a way of actually being a real-life connection, with real-world interactions.”
Zapier was designed to work with existing social media networks, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, but it also allows users with Zapier profiles to join other users’ chats.
Users are not limited to their existing channels, though.
They can join and join to any other SlackRock or Zapier account, as well as create a SlackRock account and join any of the existing SlackRock channels.
Zapiers features are designed to be flexible, so people can create multiple SlackRock accounts and join multiple Zapier accounts at the same time.
For example, a user can set up Zapier with a few people and invite them to Zapier chats, then invite others to Zapiers chats to join Zapier conversations with them.
In addition, Zapier lets users send a Zapier message to a group or to a person on another group, and then receive a Zapie message from the Zapier user.
“People don’t use Slack for anything but their own purposes,” Bren told me, adding that he hoped Zapier would become a popular platform.

The SlackRock and Zapier teams are also working on creating new tools to let people build products that can be sold or shared, Breen explained.
This includes creating a product for a company called Zapify, which Breen describes as a “small, small company in Silicon Valley that is building an application that allows people to quickly and easily share pictures with their friends.”
The Zapify team is building a tool that enables users to share pictures, video, and other types of information about products with their social networks.
The goal is to make the product useful to its
